South Korean telco LG recently launched Uplus, a subsidiary of LG

South Korean telecommunications company LG Uplus, a subsidiary of LG, recently launched the Metaverse experiment at Yonsei University in Seoul.

Dubbed Meta Yonsei, Yonsei’s metaverse features a recreation of the university’s Sinchon campus, with walkable attractions such as the school auditorium and library, as well as level access to digital resources and private meeting spaces for faculty and students.

Unlike many Metaverse experiments, Meta Yonsei restricts many of its features to verified students. While it appears that prospective students and other outsiders can physically tour the campus to see its features and landmarks, access to peer-to-peer meeting tools and certain areas of the metaverse is restricted to registered students.

According to an article published by local newspaper Chosun Biz, the Meta Yonsei experience was very well received by university students.

Typically, metaverse experiences that target specific communities, such as universities, tend to focus on social aspects. As such, they tend to target potential students or business partners. In practice, these treatments resemble digital museums rather than workspaces.

However, the Meta Yonsei digital twin appears to have been designed with productivity in mind. Tools like team meeting functionality that includes virtual workspaces, video and audio conferencing, closed captioning, and automated captioning are built right into the experience. This gives students an incentive to participate in metaversion throughout their academic careers.

It can also help prepare students for the reality of today’s global workplace, where productivity tools like Google Meet, Zoom and real-time cross-border collaboration between a diverse workforce have become the norm.

Students and faculty can also interact through structured inspections and supervised activities. A report on the project’s announcement in 2023 shows that up to a thousand users could attend virtual events in Metaverse Hall, a digital doppelgänger of the university’s actual installation, including the ability to view guest speakers and experts on a virtual stage.
